Frequently Asked Questions
How does the Petro-Plug® work?
Water enters through the top of the Petro-Plug and filters down to the patented filtration plugging media. When oil sheen is present in the discharge water, the filtration media will remove most contaminants to non-detectable levels. In the event of an oil spill of one ounce or more the Petro-Plug’s plugging media forms an instant plug that prevents any discharge.
Can the Petro-Plug be reused after an oil spill?
After a spill, the used Petro-Plug should be removed, disposed of appropriately, and replaced by a new Petro-Plug.
How often should the Petro-Plug be replaced?
Petro-Plugs should be replaced annually.
What kind of flow rates should be expected?
Depending on their diameter, Petro-Plugs installed in vertical drains have a flow rate from 1 quart to 3 gallons per minute.
Can the flow rate be increased?
The Petro-Plug®is designed to be removed easily from drains, allowing unrestricted discharge of uncontaminated water. The Petro-Plug is then reinstalled to protect your drain from oil spills.
