Secondary Oil Containment for Construction

Construction sites have a unique risk profile for oil spill prevention and containment. By nature, the site undergoes constant transformation, where challenges change daily. Locations are also often more inaccessible or remote. Solidification Products International Inc. (SPI) understands these nuances and provides market-leading oil containment solutions to resolve them.

Why Do Construction Companies Need Oil Containment Solutions?

Construction site spills can happen and require an immediate response to prevent negative environmental impact and hazardous workforce exposure. As a result, numerous safety regulations exist for oil spill containment in the construction industry.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) oversees the enforcement of the Clean Water Act. Among others, a few primary guidelines may apply to construction projects under this act. These include the Spill Prevention, Control and Countermeasures (SPCC) rule and the Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP), which are required for the necessary permits under the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System program. Construction sites’ compliance with SWPPP and SPCC is mandatory to avoid accidental oil escape and resulting fines or prison sentences.

Depending on the oil type used at a specific site, workplace hazard prevention rules issued by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) may also apply. OSHA mandates employers to address probable or known hazards to limit employee risks. For example, working with oils containing polychlorinated biphenyl poses a threat since the substance is toxic in prolonged or excessive exposures, which an escape could cause. These incidents can also produce financial consequences for construction firms without containment solutions.

How Can SPI Help?

Solidification Products International has served the construction industry for decades with oil containment solutions promoting clean discharge. Our technically advanced and patented designs filter the oil while permitting water to pass unless it detects higher-than-acceptable levels of hydrocarbons in the flow. If the oil level is excessive, SPI’s products immediately seal off the drainage to provide 100% containment, preventing accidental escape and environmental or workforce harm.

We carry a range of cost-effective solutions designed to complement your spill prevention and safety strategies.

Petro-Barriers™

We’ve built Petro-Barriers™ with three robust layers of filtering media for maximum performance. These designs handle higher water flow, with the 72-inch diameter performing at over 100 gallons per minute. We have numerous prefabricated options available and can customize a solution for unique applications.

Petro-Barriers are installed in thousands of construction sites, eliminating the need for costly, failure-prone equipment like oil stop valves and sensing switches. Installation is straightforward, and the units require little maintenance.

Petro-Pipes®

Our Petro-Pipes® are compatible with installation directly through containment area walls and liners. They’re highly customizable and handle water flows between 3 and 4 gallons per minute when properly placed. With this unique design, you’ll mount a permanent housing and slide the pipe into place, allowing for fast installation and replacement. These solutions also work with ball valves for maximum versatility.

Petro-Plugs®

Petro-Plugs® are among our simplest-to-use solutions for oil containment in construction. They fit seamlessly into 3- or 4-inch drainpipes with a flanged design and twist-to-lock seal. Removal and replacement are equally as fast, making them perfect containment companions for low-volume flow and indoor use. When installed outside, a top-hat-style filter helps keep debris out of the filtering media for longevity and effectiveness.
